The novel by Nikos Kazantzakis gained worldwide fame thanks to the legendary 1964 film directed by Michael Kakogiannis and starring Anthony Quinn. The film won three Oscars and the title tune, composed by Mikis Theodorakis based on Greek folk songs, is still one of the most popular pieces of film music. In “Zorba”, the actors create a real world in which love and pleasure coexist with jealousy and cruelty. Fifty fifty. Not leaning into the triumphant joy of being, but with a deep conviction that since you only live once, there must be space for everything in this life.
