The Diary of a Madman

The group “Ektos ton Teichon” presents Nikolai Gogol’s work “The Diary of a Madman,” a piece of exceptional psychological precision.
Written in 1835, The Diary is an almost autobiographical text by the author himself and at the same time an attempt to understand mental illness.
A madman, a peculiar man, a rejected and discarded little clerk, an artist of life, “plays” in his room like a child. He has his little swing, makes collages, dances, sings, plays roles, writes in his diary, keeps his most precious objects and memories in a trunk, transforms everyday items into whatever his imagination creates, sharpens his boss’s pencils…
But when he steps out into society, these “games” are cancelled out as dangerous, and conflict becomes inevitable.
This deep vertical descent into the innermost parts of his soul, his loneliness, and his tendencies toward grandiosity will be punished with “compliance.”
An adult does not play, does not mock, does not keep diaries; he must work on schedule, be “battery-powered,” and carry out his duties…
